A (Very) Brief History of Pop Will Eat Itself

Pop Will Eat Itself began recording under the name 'Wild and Wondering' and released their first EP, '2000 Light Ales From Home' in January 1986. Unfortunately, their first single did not do particularly well in the indie charts, though it was obvious that the band showed promise. In the hope of finding a record deal, the band members formed their own record label, Desperate Records and recorded a five track EP. The EP was named Single of the Week in NME, and was played constantly on the John Peel show. Chris Jennings, boss of record label Chapter 22, heard the band and was interested. By coincidence, the EP the label had been sent was credited to Pop Will Eat Itself. And thus the Poppies were born.

Many releases followed on the Chapter 22 label, including Poppies-anthem 'Def.Con.One' and by 1988, the major labels were interested. They were quickly snapped up by RCA, who unfortunately, demanded chart success and were subsequently disappointed by PWEI`s lack of commerciality. In the five years that they were signed to RCA, Pop Will Eat Itself recorded a catalog of innovative and exciting music, however, it was their lack of chart success that let them down and they were thrown off the label in 1993. Ironically, their last single for RCA (Get the Girl! Kill the Baddies!) achieved the Poppies' highest chart position ever, at number 9. A battle to sign the band immediately ensued, but disillusioned with the major labels, PWEI signed up to Infectious records, a new label with US distribution rights allocated to Trent Reznor's label, Nothing. The Band released three albums and innumerable singles before, with their best behind them, breaking up in mid 1996.
