You need to install the bookmarks on your browser: that is, not just open the bookmarks file, as if it were a web page, but import it so the full set of bookmarks becomes part of your browser, there every time you open it up. To do this, open up Netscape Navigator, click on the 'Bookmarks' button (holding down the lefthand mouse button as you do so) and a small menu will appear. Choose 'Edit Bookmarks' and a new window will open up on top of your normal browser window: this is the Bookmarks window. Go to the 'File' menu at the top of this new Bookmarks window and scroll down to the menu item 'Import'. The program will then ask you where the file is to be imported: direct it to your Floppy Disk drive, then doubleclick on the bookmarks file. It will then be imported. Don't forget that when the 'bookmarks window' is open you can search the contents of the bookmarks, no matter how large a collection of URLs (web addresses) it contains (my full bookmarks collection contains about 3000 sites), by using the usual windows shortcuts:
and of course you merely doubleclick on any individual bookmark to the browser to take you direct to that site. You can open up the Bookmarks menu faster, while-ever Netscape is open, by this shortcut:

| Now, of course Microsoft couldn’t do anything so simple: its Internet Explorer program uses ‘favorites’, which are not one file (like Netscape’s bookmarks) but lots of teeny tiny little separate files, so you can’t send them to anyone else, or easily re-load them if something goes wrong, etc. You can, however, export them (under the File menu in IE) to a Netscape-compatible Bookmark file; and you can Import a Netscape bookmarks file (under the same option of the File menu) but it bloody alphabeticizes them and they can’t be searched as they can in Netscape, which is a real bugger. |
